iPhone 8’s Wireless Charging Accessory Will Be Sold Separately. Could Be Launched After Smartphone Release Date.
According to the latest report from analyst John Gruber, the wireless charging accessory for the iPhone 8 will be sold separately from the handset. Moreover, it will hit the store shelves after the release of the new handset. Finally, people won’t be able to charge their phones wirelessly unless they install iOS 11.1.

However, Apple blogger John Gruber said the accessory might not launch September with the iPhone. Gruber said he heard the accessory will be sold separately and will not come included with the smartphone and that it would be released when iOS 11.1 launches. iOS 11 is due this fall alongside the 2017 iPhone lineup, so iOS 11.1 is expected after that.
“I’ve heard that inductive charging will (a) be sold separately, and (b) might be late, waiting for iOS 11.1 (a la Portrait mode last year),” said Gruber in a tweet.
The images of the wireless charging pads appeared on Chinese social media platform. Their authenticity cannot be verified. However, multiple reports about the iPhone 8 have suggested wireless charging will be embedded in the phone.
“Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit,” Wistron CEO Robert Hwang told reporters last month.
Why is the Wireless Charger sold separately?
Earlier this year Robert Hwang, chief executive of Apple supply chain company Wistron, revealed the iPhone 8 will come with wireless charging and waterproofing.”New features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit,” he said.
So, delay in testing the wireless charging is the main reason for selling the charger separately.
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 8 early next month, likely either on September 12 or 13. The phone is tipped to debut a significantly redesigned body, and will mark the 10th year since Apple starting selling iPhones. Until the announcement takes place however, we’d recommend taking all leaks with due caution.
